Georgia's Research Ecosystem
The Georgia Higher Education Healthcare Initiative is working to strengthen Georgia’s research ecosystem through funding, partnerships, and collaboration. By supporting research growth, GHEHI aims to advance innovation, drive economic development, attract leading researchers, and improve health outcomes across the state. Georgia’s research ecosystem is supported by diverse funding sources, including the NIH, the Georgia Research Alliance (GRA), the American Heart Association, public funding, venture capital, and private foundations such as the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. GHEHI believes Georgia can further strengthen its research ecosystem by investing in new and existing partnerships that foster collaboration and innovation.
Research Progress
A recent example of this commitment is the state’s $150 million investment in a new translational research center at the Medical College of Georgia. Designed to foster collaboration and accelerate innovation, the facility provides modern, flexible space for researchers to work across disciplines and advance medical breakthroughs. This investment reflects Georgia’s broader strategy to strengthen the state’s research infrastructure, attract top-tier talent, and expand opportunities for Georgia medical graduates to pursue high-quality residency training within the state.
Research Consortium
The Georgia Higher Education Healthcare Initiative hosts a collaborative research consortium dedicated to strengthening the healthcare workforce, higher education, innovation, and community-driven solutions. The consortium brings together community members, academic researchers, industry leaders, practitioners, policymakers, and government research entities to conduct collaborative research and identify shared priorities.
Through open collaboration, shared resources, and capacity-building, the consortium works to develop research partnerships, expand grant activity, encourage technology transfer, and disseminate knowledge that directly benefits communities across Georgia and South Carolina.
